Jubilee Voices Celebrates Maryland Emancipation Day in Greenbelt, Maryland

Greenbelt Community Center 15 Crescent Rd, Greenbelt, MD, United States

As part of a program commemorating Maryland Emancipation Day, Jubilee Voices will present the history of “jubilee songs,” music that originated as spirituals sung by enslaved African Americans. These songs, which spoke of struggle, deliverance, and freedom, were made popular by groups like the Fisk University Jubilee Singers in the late 1800s.
