Winter Revels: An American Celebration
Marking the 250th birthday of the nation, our 44th winter production will feature our own Jubilee Voices ensemble. Enjoy a vibrant mosaic of familiar carols, stirring spirituals; nostalgic parlor tunes; traditional folk songs, toe-tapping dances; and rousing instrumentals, along with the audience participation. Saturday, November 7
In celebration of Maryland Emancipation Day, November 1, 1864, when slavery was abolished by a constitutional amendment, Jubilee Voices will present the history of “jubilee songs,” music that originated as spirituals sung by enslaved African Americans. These songs, which spoke of struggle, deliverance, and freedom, were made popular by groups like the Fisk University Jubilee Singers in the late 1800s.
All are invited to this annual local community event that weaves together neighborhoods once divided by racial segregation and fittingly takes place during Montgomery County’s Remembrance and Reconciliation Month. Come join us in shining our lights in the darkness, promoting unity over division, remembering the past and taking steps toward a brighter future.

A Vibrant Performing Arts Community Since 1983
Washington Revels creates musical and theatrical events, as well as educational programs that celebrate cultural and seasonal traditions from around the world, for and with the diverse communities we serve.
Part of a broader organization comprising nine cities across the United States, Revels brings together people of all ages and backgrounds through celebrations of our world’s cultural and seasonal traditions. We believe that songs and stories, passed down through generations, embody a collected wisdom that illuminates the past and informs the future.
